HISTORY Of AUSTRALIAN OVER 60’S CRICKET
The first game of Over 60s cricket in the world was played at Hurlington Park ,Brighton , Victoria in January 2003. In England, Veterans cricket for players aged over 50 years has been played in several counties since the mid 1980’s. Over 60’s cricket is now played in 14 counties and is predicted to be played in 20 counties by 2009.
The inaugural National/Interstate over 60’s carnival was held in Canberra in November 2006 at the ANU grounds. Although the initial carnival was very much an adhoc affair, teams from the ACT, NSW, Tasmania and Victoria competed. Following the success of the 2006 carnival, the concept really took off with 9 teams competing at the Australian over 60’s Championships in Melbourne in November 2007.
As a prelude to the 2008 Championships held again in Melbourne, an ‘Australian eleven’ (including former test player ,Geoff Dymock ) was selected to play a ‘test match’ against a touring England over 60’s team at Hogben-Meciff Oval in Mentone. Former test fast bowler Ian Meckiff, tossed the coin to start the game. Two ACT players, Ron Axelby and Mike Gallagher, played for the Australian team.
In August 2011 the first official Australian Over 60’s team toured the UK and played 2 ‘test matches’ against an England eleven and the National Welch Team . A number of matches were also played against county over 60s teams. The Australian team, sanctioned by Cricket Australia, broke new ground in the development of over 60s cricket. With the support of Cricket Australia, over 60’s cricket will continue to grow in Australia. The inaugural Australian touring team was:
Ron Axelby (ACT Capt)
