Queanbeyan’s Mark Higgs has dominated the ACT Grade Cricket Awards for the 2010/11 cricket season.

The victorious acting Queanbeyan Captain captured the highest award of the evening taking out the DB Robin Medal for the best first grade cricketer in the ACT. Higgs lead voting for the award throughout the season and finished 6 points ahead of Weston Creek’s John Nicoll. The talented all-rounder was the third leading run scorer for the first grade competition scoring 524 runs at 43.67 and was the leading competition wicket taker with 33 wickets at an average of 17.94.

Higgs also captured the Konica Minolta Twenty20 Player of the Year award scoring 209 runs at a strike rate of 160.00 and captured 13 wickets at a strike rate of 9.69. Higgs was also named in the ACT Grade Team of the Year and named first grade Captain of the Year.

ACT Meteors and Tuggeranong wicket keeper/batter Laura Wright took out the SJ Moore Medal for the best first grade women’s player. The right hand opening batter scored an amazing 458 runs at an average of 69.83.

North Canberra Gunghalin captured the prestigious Club Championship trophy for the first time since 1979-80. The Eagles won the trophy by the smallest of margins from Queanbeyan by four points and Tuggeranong by six points to finish on 742 club championship points

Four legends of the game in the ACT were also awarded 50 years service medallions from Cricket Australia for their services to the game. The award winners included Justice John Gallop, Dennis Axelby, Pete Nelson and Ron Axelby.

Eighteen year old Aaron Ayre took out the first grade men’s batting award scoring 753 runs at 53.79 with a highest score of 154. Wests/UC left arm paceman Ben Oakley retained the first grade bowling average award taking 28 wickets at 13.46 for the season.
