Abode Hotels ACT Meteors Announce New Signing
April 16, 2018
Western District – UC all-rounder Zoe Cooke has signed a one-year contract with the Abode Hotels ACT Meteors after another successful season playing in the McDonalds ACT Women’s Premier Cricket competition.
Cooke’s signing was fittingly announced to her current teammates and club officials at the Western District-UC Presentation Night on Saturday evening before being made public – with Cooke receiving a standing ovation.
22-year old Cooke won her fourth straight SJ Moore Medal for Women’s Premier Player of the Year at the Cricket ACT Awards Night in March, and Abode Hotels ACT Meteors Coach James Allsopp is confident she will continue to perform well at the higher level.
“Zoe has dominated female cricket within the ACT over the last two seasons and has been fittingly rewarded with an Abode Hotels ACT Meteors contract,” said James Allsopp
“She represented the Meteors a number of years ago when she was much younger and comes back into the squad with far more desire, maturity and understanding of her own game which will ensure she gives herself every chance of succeeding at a national level.
“We are very excited about the value she will add to the squad and we will watch with great interest to see how hard she is willing to push herself during the pre-season.”
Cooke previously held an ACT Meteors Rookie Contract as a 17-year old and was also selected in the 2013-14 Australian Under-18’s talent squad.
Cricket ACT has also announced that Nicole Goodwin and Emily Leys will not return to the Abode Hotels ACT Meteors playing squad for the 2018-19 Women’s National Cricket League season.
Goodwin and Leys contracts expired at the end of the recent season with the decision made for them to not be renewed. South African International duo Dane van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp will also not be returning to Canberra for the coming season.
33-year old Goodwin signed with the Abode Hotels ACT Meteors in 2015-16 making the move from the NSW Breakers where she played a part in numerous WNCL titles.
“Nicole has been a fantastic servant to Cricket ACT over a number of years,” said James Allsopp
“We hope that Nicole will remain involved with the Meteors program through a mentoring role with younger players within the squad and we sincerely thank her for the integral role she has played in ensuring the Meteors continue to be a competitive national league team.”
Emily Leys joined the side at the beginning of the 2016-17 season and while she had limited opportunities with the bat and ball she was a great asset to the culture of the team.
“Emily epitomised the very essence of what it means to be a good team mate and she will certainly missed around the group in the coming season.
“We thank her for her service and wish her every success this coming season.”
Some exciting new player signings will be announced over the coming weeks.
