ACTive Academy

The ACTive Academy is a personalised bespoke cricket coaching service for boys and girls. The program is conducted by Cricket ACT’s experienced high-performance coaches.


The ACTive Academy is fundamental in ensuring the ACT continues to be a talent hub for Australian Cricket. The program is designed to enhance each participants cricket skills, general conditioning and passion for the game. Additionally, the program focusses on personal development of each participant through the vehicle of cricket. 

The Academy utilises the team of High-Performance coaches who deliver a personalised coaching service to all participants. Cricket ACT 's high performance coaches are widely recognised as some of the best producers of talent within the Australian Cricket system. 

The ACTive Academy offers both group (max. 3) and 1:1 bookings covering all cricket technical, tactical, physical and mental skill sets related to batting, bowling, wicket-keeping and fielding.

Cricket ACT have a number of experienced coaches that work in ACTive Academy. 

Vusi Sibanda

Vusi Sibanda is a former Zimbabwean international cricketer who played Test, One Day and T20 matches for his native country. Vusi brings extensive experience to the role given his exposure to cricket all around the world, in varying conditions and seeing firsthand how some of the greats played the game. Vusi is a High-Performance Coach who assists the Abode Hotels ACT Meteors, ACT Comets and a number of pathway programs.

Erin Osborne

Erin Osborne is a success story for the Abode Hotels ACT Meteors. Erin has played all forms of cricket for the Australian Women’s Cricket Team including winning a World Cup. Erin has been captain and a leading player for the Abode Hotels ACT Meteors for the past 10 years. Besides playing for the Meteors, Erin has been a longstanding WBBL player with the Melbourne Stars.

Jono Dean

A former Adelaide Striker and ACT Comet, Jono Dean is Cricket ACT’s Head Coach of the Abode Hotels ACT Meteors and Female Pathway Manager. In additional to his High-Performance duties and ACTive Academy coaching, he is also the Assistant Coach of the Sydney Thunder WBBL squad.

He is known for his explosive batting, including a rapid half century in the 2013 PM’s XI that put him in the national spotlight. He was the second ACT player to score 300 in grade cricket, ending not out after an innings that included 17 sixes and 21 fours.

Michael Delaney

Michael Delaney is our Male Pathway and Talent Manager. As a player-coach at Ginninderra Cricket Club, he coached them from the wooden spoon in 2015/16 to their first Douglas Cup victory in 26 years in 2018/19. He is currently the Bowling Coach for the Abode Hotels ACT Meteors as well as coaching the ACT Aces and numerous underage male rep teams.

In his playing career, Delaney represented ACT in U19s before joining the Comets. He also earned a rookie contract with the South Australian Redbacks.

Kyle Piper

Kyle Piper is the Head Coach of the ACT Comets and lead coach of the ACT Rookie Development Program. He is also the ACT/NSW Country Comets & U/19 Head Coach. Kyle has contributed to the development of several talented players from the ACT region and has helped a number of players to secure State and BBL contracts.

In his playing career, Piper represented the ACT in U19s.

Michael Barrington-Smith

Michael Barrington-Smith is our Athletic Performance and Sport Science Sport Medicine (SSSM) Manager. His role includes overseeing and delivering all aspects of the physical performance program for the Abode Hotels ACT Meteors, ACT Comets and ACT Pathway Teams. He is fielding coach for the Abode Hotels ACT Meteors as well as coaching within the ACTive Academy.

Michael is a current leading batsman in ACT Premier Cricket for Tuggeranong Valley CC as well as representing the ACT Comets.

Zoe Cooke

A dominant figure in local cricket, the right arm fast bowling all-rounder claimed the SJ Moore Medal for Women’s Player of the Year four years in a row from 2013/14 – 2017/18. She plays for the Abode Hotels ACT Meteors and played for the Melbourne Renegades in 2018/19.

Ben Ryan

Ben Ryan has extensive experience in developing and nurturing talent within the ACT. Ben is a longstanding pathway coach and creates strong foundations for talented youth to become outstanding future cricketers. Ben is also the current Club Coach at ANU CC.

Jordie Misic

Jordie Misic has graduated from the ACT Pathway program and experienced national competition at underage carnivals. Jordie understands the importance for all young players to develop a strong basic skill set which will allow for expansion and development of match play in the future.

Jordie has been an ACT Comets squad member and is a current player for the Ginninderra CC.

Olivia Thornton

Olivia Thornton is the General Manager, High Performance at Cricket ACT. Olivia has a background in Education and played pathway and senior cricket for NSW. Olivia has extensive experience within High Performance Sport and has previously worked at the Australian Sports Commission and Cricket Australia. She is passionate about the holistic development of young cricketers within the region.

Matthew Phelps

Matthew Phelps is the program lead for the ACTive Academy and General Manager, Commercial & Operations at Cricket ACT.

In his playing days, Matthew was a professional cricketer with NSW and won a number of domestic titles. He finished his career in 2006 as the Pura Cup player of the season, holds a number of run scoring records in the Sydney Grade Competition and is an accomplished Level 3 coach.

Academy Structure

The Active Academy will cater for aspiring junior cricketers across the Canberra region. Male and female participants are welcome.

Hourly time slots 1:1 or small group bookings (available times outlined below).
All participants receive preferential opportunities to maintain involvement in the Academy from term to term.

Individual 1:1 Session - $900+GST per 10-week term

Group Booking (Min. 2 participants, Max. 3 participants) - $1500+GST per 10-week term, per group

Casual Booking - $95+GST per hour (subject to availability, preference given to term bookings)
