A spectacular century from Matthew Gilkes on day two has seen ACT/NSW Country Comets defeat NSW Metro in a three-day trial match at Blacktown this week.

Gilkes hit an unbeaten 100 runs from just 115 balls with 13 fours and three sixes to give the Comets a commanding lead at the close of day two.

Comets won the toss and elected to bat on Monday with opening batsman Henry Hunt (69), Jay Lento (61) and Blake Macdonald (56) all making significant contributions.

After declaring for 303 late in the day, the Comets bowlers had a few overs at NSW Metro and left them reeling at 2-9 at stumps on day one.

An impressive bowling display from Nathan McAndrew (3-26) and Greg West (3-37) saw NSW Metro all out for 141 on day two.

Gilkes went on to make his ton before the Comets again declared on 174 leaving NSW Metro with the daunting task of 336 runs to win.

Opening the final days play at 1-14, NSW Metro struggled to find their rythym and soon found themselves at 7-55. Unable to steady, NSW Metro were all out for 105.

The ACT/NSW Country Comets open their 2018/19 Toyota Futures League campaign on October 9 against Queensland at Manuka Oval.
