Cricket ACT has appointed Mick Delaney as the organisations first Coach Development Manager to unearth the next generation of Canberra cricket coaches and provide a dedicated support resource for grassroots coaches through to high performance.

A former first class cricketer, Delaney brings plenty of experience to the table having led premier club Ginninderra to Douglas Cup victory in 2018/19 and as a current high performance coach with the ACT Meteors and male pathway programs.

“It’s no secret that the success of all of our programs and competitions is dependant on having high-quality coaches involved,” said Delaney.

“The role of a coach is rapidly evolving, and we need to ensure that we remain one step ahead.

“While technique and tactics is obviously important, coaches are now looked at to lead the culture and environment, look after player wellbeing, build strong rapport with their community and so much more.

“My role will be to work closely with our community with a focus on recruitment and retention, delivering professional development, coach education, building strong and positive environments, and improving club structure and support for our coaches.”

Former Australian cricketer and ACT Meteor Erin Osborne will move into the vacated role of Male Pathway Manager, in an exciting step forward in her transition from player to coach.

Osborne recently completed a ‘player to coach pilot program’ in 2020, delivered by Cricket ACT and Cricket Australia as part of Australian Cricket’s Press for Progress strategy to become Australia’s leading sport for women and girls.

“As a player, cricket has provided me with so many opportunities and now I want to give back to the sport that has given me so much,” said Osborne.

“I’m extremely grateful of the support and trust that Cricket ACT has given to me and I am looking forward to working with all areas of the organisation to continue to enhance and develop our male pathway programs.”

Josh O’Brien, former Boxing Australia CEO, also recently commenced in the role of General Manager – High Performance this week.
