NSW Blues and Australian bowler Mitchell Starc and Sydney Thunder star Ollie Davies beamed live into homes across the ACT on Wednesday (September 15) to speak with students from nine different schools as part of the 2021 Cricket NSW Country Blitz program.

The Country Blitz is an annual event where NSW’s elite cricketers and coaches reach into communities in regional and rural centres plus the nation’s capital. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the program was delivered remotely this year, with more than thirty cricketers and state head coaches participating in over 50 virtual Q&As with students, club cricketers and community coaches.

Davies, who will again feature for the Sydney Thunder in KFC BBL|11, joined Starc in talking about their respective cricket journeys plus fielded questions from students who attend Canberra Grammar School, Duffy Primary School, Evelyn Scott School, Florey Primary School, Holy Family Primary School, Palmerston District Primary School, Radford College, Sacred Heart Primary School, Yarralumla Primary School.

“It’s been a challenging couple of years with the pandemic, particularly over recent months and while we can’t get out into the community in person, it was fantastic to connect with schools online,” Davies said.

“Both Mitch and I had a heap of fun talking to students about all things cricket and hopefully our stories will inspire many to register for their local cricket club this summer, where they are guaranteed to have a heap of fun in a safe and supportive environment.”

The Sydney Thunder will return to Canberra later this year for a pair of blockbuster KFC Big Bash League matches including their BBL|11 season opener against the Brisbane Heat on Monday  December 6.

With the support of the ACT Government, the Thunder will then return to Manuka Oval on Tuesday December 28 to play last season’s runner’s up, the Perth Scorchers.

“The Thunder love playing at Manuka Oval and I’m really looking forward to our two massive Big Bash games in Canberra this summer,” Davies explained.

“We always have outstanding support from our fans in Canberra and the surrounding area, so I can’t wait to take on the Heat and Scorchers in front of a large home crowd.”
