In the 2018/19 season, Cricket ACT and Cricket NSW made it a top priority to increase the number of junior cricket participants and hence created the Junior Cricket Growth Strategy which can be downloaded on our Publications page.
This push for more registrations at the junior level saw an impressive 19 teams added to the 2019/20 season, from 167 to 186 teams.
Cricket ACT and Cricket NSW staff were eager to continue the upward trend this season although they were understandably working against the impacts of COVID.
That said, the ACT region clearly has a strong appetite for cricket and the participation numbers have once again increased from 186 teams to 191 teams for the 2020/21 season.
To add to this brilliant outcome, the number of girl teams have grown from 9 in 2019/20 to 17 in 2020/21; an increase of 90%.
Junior Cricket and Zone Administration Manager, Luke Masullo, stated “We are excited to see this type of response on the back of an impressive year for women and girls’ cricket in Australia.
We also have to pay our junior clubs a huge amount of gratitude as their work has been an important driving factor in the growth of junior cricket participation these last couple seasons.”
Junior cricket in the ACT started last weekend, with Friday evening matches kicking off today, October 23.
