The Spirit of Cricket Award is presented each season to the states’ men’s and women’s teams who are voted as having played in the best spirit and with the greatest respect for the game. The umpires cast votes for each team following every match by considering several factors including: respect for opponents, respect for umpires and respect for the game. Winners are determined at the end of the season and given the Richie Benaud Spirit of Cricket Award.
“It is pleasing to see players and teams from across the country recognised in these awards, a testament to the strength of our domestic competitions” Drew Ginn, Cricket Australia Executive General Manager, High Performance, said.
The award is to be shared with Tasmania and NSW after voting ended in a three-way tie. Congratulations to both these teams, for NSW it is the ninth time they have won the women’s award, while Tasmania has gone back-to-back in both the men’s and women’s awards.
At the State Awards it was also revealed that ACT Meteor Katie Mack came in third in the WNCL Player of the Year, a significant achievement.
When recruiting for the squad, Olivia Thornton, Cricket ACT High Performance Manager, prioritises high moral character to ensure the spirit of cricket is upheld. The ACT Meteors have proven themselves to be great competitors in every sense of the word, and this award is evidence of that.
“At the start of the season, the Meteors acknowledge that they had an important responsibility to uphold the spirit of the game, at a local and state level. They set out to play a competitive brand of cricket, but never at the expense of mutual respect for their opponents, match officials, the rules or the basic joy of our great game.”
We caught up with Skipper Erin Osborne to ask about the work that had been done within the team, and what sort of culture they had been striving to build.
“This season has not always been smooth sailing with injuries and personal hardships. However, the expectation of everyone involved in our program has remained consistent and that is being good people on and off the field.”
“The Spirit of Cricket award is great recognition and speaks volumes of the culture we have at ACT.”
The award is a credit to the attitudes of the team and staff, both on and off the field. Congratulations to all involved, it is well deserved.
