Comets Regional Academy

What is it?

The Comets Regional Academy is the first stepping stone in the ACT Male Pathway. This academy is used as a development and education piece for young athletes aged between 12 and 16. This is the first selection tool for higher honours in the ACT Male pathway.

Program Outline

  • 8 week program including:
    • Batting theory and practical exercises
    • Bowling theory and practical exercises
    • Freedom sessions
    • Strength, conditioning and fitness testing
    • Leadership and mental skills
    • Tactical and planning
    • Fielding
    • Scenario session

Selection Process

Selection trials will be held in May with 3 selectors at each trial. Selections will be made in accordance with Cricket ACT's selection policy. Click here to download.

Intra-zone Competition

What is it?

  • 4 team competition - Selections are origin based
    • 2 teams from Cricket ACT - The 2 ACT teams in each age group are selected from the Comets Regional Academy.
    • 1 team from Southern Tablelands
    • 1 team from South East
  • This competition is used to help identify players for the Youth Country Championships for the next season.

Purpose

  • Entry level representative pathway competitions for players, coaches & umpires.
  • Talent identification of representative players.
  • Forms part of the selection process for off season NSW & Cricket ACT Regional Academies Programs (2020).
  • U16 competition is used to select and prepare for the Bradman Cup.
  • Compete for intra-association titles.

Youth Country Championships (YCC)

What is it?

  • ACT/NSW Country based representative competition
    • 2x conferences
    • Thunder & Sixers - 8 teams per conference
  • The best 26 players are selected, with players evenly balanced across the teams.

Delivery

The YCC conferences will be delivered in two components:

  • 3 day carnivals
  • 2x home & away fixtures

Purpose

  • Provide a true and equal representative pathway for country cricketers, coaches & umpires.
  • Talent identification of potential state challenge players.
  • Selection process for Kookaburra Cup and 13 / 14 / 15 State Challenges
  • Compete for country pathway champions (Thunder Conference)

Kookaburra Cup, Bradman Cup & McDonalds Country Colts

What is it?

  • NSW country representative carnivals

Purpose

  • Talent identification of potential State Challenge players and coaches
  • Give opportunity to talented cricketers to test themselves against the best cricketers in ACT/NSW Country
  • Kookaburra Cup aids in the selection process for U14s State Challenge
  • Bradman Cup aids in the selection process for the U16s State Challenge
  • The Bradman Cup and Country Colts competitions aid in the selection process for 17 and 19 ACT/NSW Country State Squads, respectively
  • Win points towards Hogg/Silver Shield

State Challenge

What is it?

  • Representative Carnivals in ages 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 & 19
  • 1 team selected from South East NSW/ACT in ages 13 and 14
  • 1 team selected from Southern NSW in ages 15, 16, 17 & 19

Purpose

  • Talent identification of potential junior state players and cricketers for NSW Transition Squad / Cricket ACT Performance Squad
  • Give opportunity to talented cricketers to test themselves against the best cricketers in NSW
  • Provide opportunity for representative coaches to stretch themselves in challenging environments
  • Selection process for U17 and U19 state teams
  • Primary selection process for NSW Zone Academy Programs

U15 Standalone 

What is it?

  • ACT Under 15s team compete at the Under 15s National Carnival

Purpose

  • Give ACT cricketers the best opportunity to improve and perform against the best players in the country
  • Compete at a national level
  • Provide exposure for ACT cricketers
  • Genuine pathway for ACT/NSW Country Championship U17s team
  • Represent the ACT cricket community with pride!

U17 and U19 Teams

What is it?

  • Cricket Australia run National Championships
  • ACT/NSW Country teams participates in ages 17 and 19

Purpose

  • Talent identification of future 1st class cricketers for NSW Blues, Thunder & Sixers franchises
  • Talent identification of future ACT Comets / Second XI Teams
  • Give opportunity to talented cricketers to test themselves against the best cricketers in Australia
  • Provide opportunity for talented coaches to test themselves at the pathway national level
  • Selection process for Cricket Australia U19 Team and/or Talent Squad
  • Compete for national titles

Elite 19s

What is it?

  • 6 team competition for U19 players in the ACT/Southern District region.
    • North, East, South & West Canberra have teams as well as South Coast/Monaro and Goulburn/Southern Highlands.

Purpose

  • Entry point for players in the pathway (U18s Colts, Performance Squad, ACT Open Men's sides)
  • It is a participation tournament in that it provides a bridge for players transitioning from ASC and regional centres and/or junior clubs into the Canberra Premier competition.
