It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Allan John Casey, a Life-Member of Cricket ACT and a stalwart of the sporting community. Allan leaves behind a legacy of immense dedication to cricket in the region.
Allan was a notable figure on the cricket field, playing for Western District Cricket Club from 1971 to 1981. A skilled wicket-keeper, he played 81 matches, executing 96 dismissals. In 1973 alone, he played 11 matches in 1st Grade, recording an impressive 21 dismissals.
His contribution to sport extended far beyond his playing days. Allan took on significant administrative roles, notably serving for several years as the Secretary of Western District Cricket Club. In 1978, he was a key member of a three-man committee tasked with drafting the ACT Cricket Association (ACTCA) constitution, by-laws, and rules. That same year, he was elected Secretary of the Association. During his tenure in office, he played a crucial role in the development of the ACTCA's representative program, which grew very rapidly under his guidance.
One of his most significant achievements in administration was proposing the 1982 ACT tour of New Zealand. He successfully co-ordinated the efforts of the players to raise the $42,000 required to meet the costs of the tour, and he served as the team manager. While the tour was very successful, the immense effort affected his health and forced his resignation as ACTCA Secretary in April 1983. In recognition of his tireless efforts and immense contribution to the sport, Allan was elected a Life Member of the Association four months later.
Allan continued to support representative cricket long after his time as Secretary, generously giving his time to manage many ACT and ACT Colts sides throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
Beyond cricket, Allan’s dedication to local sports was widely recognized. In 2000, he was awarded the prestigious Australian Sports Medal for his continuous service as a referee, administrator, and referee coach.
Allan John Casey will be remembered as a deeply committed player, an industrious administrator, and a passionate supporter of sport in the ACT. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the sporting landscape of the region.
Cricket ACT expresses its deepest sympathies to Allan's family, friends and the wider cricket community. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by his passing.
The funeral service for Allan will be held at St Michaels Parish (Tyrell Circuit Street, Kaleen) on Saturday 10th October 2026, commencing at 2pm. Please wear bright smart casual attire.
